How to plan the layers of a concrete paver patio

A typical interlocking concrete paver patio uses a prepared subgrade, a compacted aggregate base, bedding sand, pavers and joint material. The base thickness and drainage design depend on the soil, climate and expected loads.

Design the base and drainage first

Before digging, check buried utilities and local requirements. Plan where runoff will go, away from foundations. Follow the selected paving system’s instructions for base material and compaction. A flat bedding layer helps set the pavers, and should not be used to hide large defects in the base.

Check edges and joints

Use edge restraints suitable for the system. Install and seat the pavers as specified, then fill the joints with the recommended material. Check that water drains after installation. A permeable pavement uses a different aggregate and drainage design, so follow its separate specification.
